News flash: You don’t find the perfect career. You CREATE your perfect career.

One of the biggest patterns I’ve picked up in my own work with clients is that most people simply accept their roles at face value. They resign themselves to what their managers tell them to do. They feel like they have to “settle” until they finally land their dream job. They never think to negotiate a role, because that’s not how it works, right?

Actually, it is. Negotiation isn’t just about salary and vacation days; it’s about the give and take of what you get from the company and what the company gets from you. But it’s also not a zero-sum game. The more your company leverages your core strengths — the things you’re passionate about and therefore naturally gifted at and motivated to do — the better off they are, too. The more they invest in your growth — even if ultimately builds you toward your next move — the more they reap the immediate benefits, too.

The journey toward your dream career doesn’t end the minute you take the next step or land the next position. Ongoing career management is a lifelong project, and you often have so much more power within the process than you think.

You’re the artist of your life and your career. Take an active role in creating it.
